My approach

About Me

Sabrina Hinkis, MS . Functional Medicine Nutritionist

Root-Cause Healing Powered by Science, Nutrition, and Genetics
Welcome! I am a Functional Medicine Nutritionist based in Lake Forest, California, dedicated to helping you achieve lasting wellness. My approach is deeply rooted in science, combining advanced biochemistry, genetic insights, and evidence-based nutrition to find the true source of your health struggles.
From Pharmaceutical Research to Holistic Healing
My journey began with a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, which led to an early career in the pharmaceutical industry and genetic research. This foundational work sparked my lifelong passion for genetics. In 2008, I earned my Master’s degree in Human Nutrition, publishing research that explored the powerful intersection of genetics and vitamins. Since then, I have been guiding clients toward vibrant health through personalized nutrition and lifestyle consulting.
The Functional Medicine Difference
In 2014, I expanded my practice into Functional Medicine. This allowed me to bridge the gap between my scientific background and holistic care. As a former pharmaceutical scientist, I know that medication is often essential and lifesaving. However, conventional medicine frequently treats only the symptoms of a condition. True, lasting health requires looking deeper.
Your Body is Wired to Heal
I firmly believe that the human body is programmed to heal itself if we provide the right conditions. By analyzing your unique biochemistry, lifestyle, and genetic profile, we can pinpoint the underlying triggers of your symptoms.
You have the power to reduce your chronic disease risks and even reverse certain conditions. With my guidance, we will tackle your health goals one by one using food as medicine, lifestyle modifications, and strategic supplementation. Let’s work together to build the optimal environment for your body to thrive.

Functional Medicine

Functional Medicine is patient focused and not disease focused. I do not treat a person’s disease as much as I am assessing for the weaknesses and imbalances in your physiology to try to understand why you have the disease to begin with. By discovering and correcting the underlying cause of disease process or dysfunction of the body, the body can return to a state of health and wellness.

The beauty of functional medicine is its aim to really identify what the causes contribute to a weakened or compromised physiological function. The causes vary from person to person, but as we begin to treat the specific mechanisms that are causing the body to malfunction then your body will do the work of slowly restoring itself to optimal health. Examples of malfunction that can be improved with nutrition and supplementation:

  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Intestinal pathogens
  • Leaky gut
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Medication interferences
  • Environmental toxicities
  • Compromised detoxification
  • Food allergies / sensitivities

In our journey together we will test to find these issues, and target them one at a time.

Testing available:

  • Comprehensive Stool Analysis: Evaluates your gut microbiome DNA, looking for parasitic infections, candida overgrowth, and inflammation markers.
  • SIBO Breath Testing: Measures hydrogen and methane gases to pinpoint bacterial overgrowths in the small intestine.
  • Food Sensitivities: Identifying specific inflammatory food triggers through advanced IgG/IgA antibody testing.
  • DUTCH – hormone testing. Test for stress hormone and sex hormones as well as hormone metabolites that are important for cancer risk.
  • Nutrient testing and more– like Omega 3 , inflammation markers, vitamin and mineral level, Metabolic Vulnerability test. This is a blood test that gives you a much dipper dive into your health.
  • Genetic test –  a swab test or using your 23andMe test or AncestryDNA to use your genetics to find specific vitamin and minerals you need, specific supplements that will help you and much more.
  • Environmental toxin test  – like Glyphosate, plastics, mycotoxins, herbsides, and pesticides to see what is root cause of your illness.
